Q: Do I have to paint Hardiplank siding?
A:Yes, Hardiplank lap siding must be painted, stained or coated. You may order many James Hardie products coated with the The ColorPlus™ Collection by James Hardie factory finishing and coloring system; or you can have the siding stained or painted. Warranties vary from 10 - 20 years.

You are required to have James Hardie siding painted, stained or coated within 180 days of installation.

Q: Do you require a weather-resistant barrier behind Hardiplank siding?
A:James Hardie as well as the Model Building Codes (UBC, Standard, etc.) require the use of a weather-resistant barrier. It is good building practice.

A:The following are suitable trim products for use with Hardiplank siding:
  • Fiber Cement
  • Real Wood
  • Engineered Wood

Q: What are the "R" values for Hardiplank siding?
A:The "R" value range is .05 - .19. However, once the existing siding is removed, we install Dow Chemical's Tuff-R 1/2" sheathing insulation which adds and additional 3.3 R value. Dow states, "the homeowner can realize an energy savings of 25% on the heating and cooling portion of their utility bill."

In addition, we use Dupont's Tyvek Home Wrap as a moisture and air infiltration barrier which gives additional R value.

Q: How close to the ground can I install Hardiplank siding?
A:Model Building Codes (UBC, Standard, etc.) require that exterior sidings be installed with a minimum 6" clearance of soil. This will allow for clearance when soil is back-filled against the foundation and footings.

Q: What type of weather-resistant barrier is required?
A:Any weather-resistant barrier complying with the Model Building Codes (UBC, Standard, etc.) is acceptable.

Q: How much does it weigh?
A:2.3 pounds per square foot.
